2020 PVGRC Tracking Class (1st Class)
January 19 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Want to get started in tracking? The club will be holding a beginning tracking class again in 2020.
Who: Club members are eligible to participate with one dog of any breed. The class is limited to eight dogs, with five openings for those just beginning the sport and three openings for those with a bit of experience who want to work toward TD certification. Tracking is an active outdoor sport, and it’s the one time when we actually encourage our dogs to pull, so participants must be able to follow their dogs through fields with moderate cover.
What: Participants will learn about tracking equipment, how to lay a track, and how to read and handle their dog. The first day will have a discussion of the sport and the equipment, followed by a demonstration and a brief working session. Subsequent days will be all hands-on. The last day will offer a mock TD test for those teams who are ready. Participants are expected to lay tracks and help others as well as working with their own dogs.
Where: Classes will be in and around Lovettsville, Virginia and may range as far as Leesburg, Virginia or Boonesboro, Maryland depending upon site availability. Unless otherwise planned, we’ll meet at Bob Kurtz’ house at the start of each session. Indoor facilities are available there, but generally there will be no facilities available once we get out to the fields. Pot-luck lunches after class are an option.
When: There will be eight classes, with the following tentative schedule. Changes to the schedule may be required due to weather and/or instructor availability. While tracking is an all-weather sport, we will cancel class if snow or ice makes travel dangerous.
