HOBART ‘HAP’ ARNOLD GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP TROPHY
The Hap Arnold Good Sportsmanship Award recognizes a member who has contributed unselfishly to the Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club and to the advancement of the sport of dogs without regard to personal honor. For those of you who did not have the pleasure of knowing him, a little bit of information about Hap Arnold.
Hobart Sloan Arnold, Hap, was among the founding members of PVGRC and a Life Member of the Club. He passed away in August 1994. Hap finished his golden champion, Rebel, about 50 years ago. Over the years, Hap served as Club President, Specialty Secretary, and Specialty Show Announcer. He served as Conformation Ring Steward many times, and was the official Statistician for the GRCA for more than 20 years. Just months before his death, and in failing health, Hap stepped forward to serve as Chief Conformation Steward for the 1994 Eastern Regional Specialty, when no one else would. A teacher of those new to dogs, a trusted friend of old-timers, and a man dedicated to the Golden Retriever and the sport of dogs, the club is proud to honor his memory through the Hap Arnold Award.
We also honor once again those who have received the Hap Arnold Award in the past. So we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the past recipients and if any of you are present, please stand and be recognized. Thanks to all of you for your dedication and service to the Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club.
There are so many good things to say about this year’s recipient that it is hard to know where to start. The immediate thing that comes to mind, probably to the chagrin of her husband, is this year’s recipient does not know the definition of the word “no”. If there is something that needs to be done, big or small, she is the first person to say, okay, how do we get this done. She has been seen helping at many of our spring specialties, even though she does not do conformation. She has been seen working at our agility trials, even though she does not do agility. She always has a smile on her face, and a laugh that is contagious, even when is it 8 pm on the evening of a hunt test, and there are three of us left, with a lot of work to do. We are giving away who the recipient is, so we will continue with… She has been raising and training Golden Retrievers for almost fifty years, and is a Life Member of GRCA. she was a member of the 2017 National Steering Committee, the 2017 National Field Trial Chair…she was a member of the GRCA Board of Directors for countless years, and most recently the Chair of our Field Committee, and a member of the Board. She is always eager to help a beginner to learn her passion, which is field training. She is always eager to teach a puppy how to pick up a bird. And again, does everything with a smile on her face. Most of you have figured out who this year’s recipient is, because she probably has helped you a time or two…the recipient of this year’s Hap Arnold award is Ann Strathern.
